Tobogganing
What’s more fun than going straight down a steep hill as fast as you can go? There are many spots to go tobogganing, but my personal favourite is right here in Almonte. Right behind the Almonte arena there is a good-sized hill that is my go-to spot. It’s usually busy during the days and the weekends but it’s quiet during the nights or early morning. Not only is it fun for the kids its can also be fun for the adults. Next time you go tobogganing pack some hot chocolate and some snacks and head to the great hill at Gemmill Park.
Ice Skating
Skating is not everyone’s cup of tea, but it can be fun to watch. There are many places to skate during the winter, a frozen pond, lake and sometimes an icy road. Skating is an activity that can happen all year-around. There are some benefits of skating like giving your cardiovascular system a workout, creating new friends, improving your balance, coordination, and endurance, and it’s free if you use an outdoor rink. Here in Mississippi Mills, be sure to take advantage of the free public skating during the holidays at both the Almonte and Pakenham arenas.
Skiing
The best way to spend time with your family is to spend some time on the slopes. Not everyone skis or snowboards but it’s important to break out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself occasionally. Spending time on the hill gives yourself and your family a break from electronics, creates special memories, and there is nothing more fun than the chair lift conversations. Hating winter is easy but it you might have a change of heart after you try skiing or snowboarding.
